Credit card payment holiday

If you think you are going to struggle to make your normal monthly credit card payments, we can offer you a credit card payment reduction. This means you can temporarily reduce your credit card payments to zero per month, for your next 3 monthly repayments.

 

It’s simple to apply and it won’t affect your credit rating.

Who can apply for a credit card payment holiday?

You can apply if you meet all of the following:

 

  •  Your finances have been affected by COVID-19

  •  You are up to date with your monthly credit card payments

  •  The credit card account is held in your name (additional cardholders cannot apply, it must be the account holder)

Some important things to consider before applying:

A credit card payment holiday offers you a temporary change to your normal monthly payments.  You should consider the following before deciding if a payment holiday will be right for you. The decision on if and when to apply for a payment holiday will very much depend upon your individual circumstances.

 

  • You will not have to make a payment for your next 3 monthly repayments, The reduced payment will begin on your first statement date after we set up your payment holiday. (Your statements will show a minimum monthly payment due of £1 but we won’t collect that)

  • We won’t collect any payments via direct debit during the payment holiday, but if you pay via standing order you will have to amend that with your bank.

  • You will continue to be charged interest at the existing interest rate on your card. By not having to make a payment for 3 months it means that you will take longer to repay your balance.

  • Whilst you will continue to be able to use your card as normal during the payment holiday you should carefully consider the future impact of additional debt on you.

  • Even if you don’t spend on your card during the payment holiday your balance will go up as a result of interest posting to your account. As your payments are a percentage of your balance, this means your normal repayments will be more than before the holiday as your balance will be higher.

  • We only offer a 3 month payment holiday

  • At the end of the payment holiday, the minimum payment goes back to the percentage prior to the payment holiday. The amount of the payment will always be shown on your statement.

  • Alternative to a Payment Holiday


    If your Direct Debit is currently set-up to pay more than the minimum monthly repayment amount i.e. more than 3% of the outstanding balance, you can contact us on 028 9024 1822 (Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm) to have your Direct Debit changed to collect the minimum payment amount instead.

  • What is a payment holiday?

    It’s an arrangement where a lender allows a customer to make no monthly repayments, or for some lenders a token payment, for up to 3 months, without being considered as being in arrears.  

  • Will I be eligible for a payment holiday?

    Customers who have experienced, or are about to experience, a short term financial impact, either directly or indirectly as a result of coronavirus, can request a payment holiday.


    If we do not believe that a 3 month payment holiday would be in your best interests, we will consider whether a lesser term might be more appropriate, or whether any other forbearance options would be more suitable for you, given your overall financial circumstances.

  • How long do I have to apply?

    If you need a payment holiday, you can apply to us up until 14 July.  The payment holiday will last for the 3 months from the date it is agreed.  So, if a 3 month payment holiday is agreed from 1 May, you would not be expected to make the May, June and July monthly repayments. 

  • I have received my monthly statement. Do I need to make the repayment amount shown on it?

    Yes. If you have received your monthly statement, showing your normal repayment amount, then your payment holiday will commence from the following month. That means that you will have to pay the repayment amount due, as advised on your statement, but you will not have to make any repayments for the following three months.

  • Will I still receive monthly statements during my payment holiday?

    Yes, but during the 3 month payment holiday your monthly statements will show a repayment amount of £1, which we will not collect, or expect you to pay.

  • Will I still get charged interest if I take a payment holiday?

    Yes.


    Because interest will continue to be charged and the amount you owe will not reduce during the payment holiday period, you will need to consider whether it is the right thing for you, especially if you are taking payment holidays on other products. This is because the amount you will owe at the end of the payment holiday will have increased, as will your minimum monthly payments. You should consider your options carefully and, if you can afford to continue making your payments, you should do so in order to keep down your overall cost of borrowing.

  • How long will it take to process my application?

    We are doing our best to support our customers during these difficult times. As we are currently experiencing extremely high volumes of queries as a result of Covid-19, it may take us up to 7 days to deal with your request.

  • Will taking a payment holiday have a negative impact on my credit report?

    No. The monthly payments you do not make during the payment holiday period will not be reported to credit reference agencies as being in arrears.  

  • Can I still use my credit card?

    Yes. Being granted a payment holiday will not impact on your ability to use your credit card.  We may however be able to suspend card use in accordance with our usual business practices, such as in the event of fraud.  We will advise you if we need to do this. 

  • What happens at the end of the payment holiday?

    Your normal contractual monthly payments will resume.

     

    At the end of the payment holiday, if you do not think you can afford to make your regular contractual payments, you should get in touch with us before your next payment date to let us know.

  • Where can I get more general debt advice?

    The Money Advice Service provides information on free and impartial debt advice. This includes organisations that can provide online debt advice support, as telephone and face-to-face advice services will be very busy at the present time.

  • I’ve received letters about being in ‘persistent debt’ and recently agreed a payment plan – can I still have a payment holiday?

    Yes.   

  • Does a payment holiday mean that my terms and conditions are to change?

    No.

Apply for a credit card payment holiday

To apply for a payment holiday complete the online form below.

 

When you apply you will need your 16 digit credit card number, you can find that on the front of your card.  We will let you know via a confirmation letter whether we have accepted your application, and when your payment holiday will begin. We will try to respond to your request within 5 to 7 days from when you apply.

 

We will try to start your payment holiday from the date of your next statement.  However if your next payment is due in the next few days, then your payment holiday may start the following month.
