The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, is #BreakTheBias, celebrating women’s achievements as well as promoting diversity, equality, and inclusivity. Here we speak to AIB’s Head of Healthcare Marguerite Mulvey about her experience and achievements.
Marguerite has been working in the healthcare industry for over 20 years. Over this period, she has forged lasting relationships with key operators and investors and played an integral role in shaping AIB’s growth strategy in the healthcare sector. Her understanding of the sector has its roots in these deep client relationships, and with her team she has built an impressive portfolio of reputable clients whom the bank has continued to support throughout the pandemic.
Marguerite brings great passion and enthusiasm to her role, using her industry knowledge to deliver Sector specific solutions, products, and services for AIB’s customers. Accolades the bank has secured under Marguerite’s leadership include nominations in the Lending categories for the 2021 and 2022 Health Investor Lender of the Year and 2021 Laing Buisson Lender of the Year Awards. In her home life, she is a busy mother of twins juggling the competing demands of work and homelife and being a keen supporter from the sidelines at many sporting activities.
Marguerite explains: “I really enjoy working in the healthcare sector, an industry that is critical because it provides care for the most vulnerable in society. I started my career at AIB on the Graduate Training Scheme and progressed to become a healthcare specialist, having funded a number of opportunities within the sector. I am proud to work with a team of dedicated relationship managers who have built lasting customer relationships through a proactive work ethos built on knowledge, experience and understanding of the ever-changing healthcare landscape.
My greatest working achievement is being nominated twice in the Capital Provider category of the Health Investor Power Fifty Awards. The Health Investor Power Fifty is one of the most established events in the health and social care calendar. These independent, peer-nominated awards celebrate the industry’s most effective, inspiring, and influential leaders. I am proud to receive this recognition and to be considered as one of the leading individuals in the sector.
One of my biggest challenges has been supporting AIB’s customers and my own team during the pandemic. It has been a challenging period for everyone, and the healthcare sector has really felt the impact of Covid. It has also highlighted everyone’s resolve and resilience.
Recent events have elevated the sector’s importance and increased the criticality of Social Care. At AIB we are delighted to collaborate with operators across the healthcare sector whose strength has come to the fore during the pandemic, adapting their operating models to new ways of working. Our understanding of the changing care market and pressures from the economy means we can deliver funding solutions that are helping our customers to be well-positioned to grow with confidence.
One area of focus is recognising the benefits of running a more sustainable business, for example looking at energy efficiency in the running of operations. Sustainability is a critical area that we are very passionate about at AIB, as we look to protect our future environment. We’re committed to achieving Carbon Neutrality across our operations by 2030, using a Net Zero approach. Beyond our own operations, we are supporting our customers and helping them transition to a low carbon economy.
Our team is constantly looking at new ways to stay ahead in this industry and one area I am committed to is investment in our team. At AIB the quality and attitude of our people is at the core of everything we stand for. I believe our people are the distinguishing factor that sets us apart from the competition. We strive to ensure our people have the opportunity to reach their full potential, and through training and development and most importantly direct exposure to the sector, enable them to become true specialists in this field. I take immense pride in having seen a number of staff succeed in their careers over the years, be that within or outside AIB.
Celebrating International Women’s Day is a wonderful way to celebrate achievements of women across the globe and raise awareness about equal opportunity in the workplace and beyond. Working in a senior leadership position at AIB I hope my passion and work ethic will inspire others to have the confidence and resilience to thrive in their working environments.”
